10 Modern Side Tables We’re Loving Right Now
Modern, timeless, and sustainable side tables for the modern Scandinavian home from iconic Danish design brands
Modern design does not have to mean splurging on a piece that goes out of style the following season.
That’s why we’re sharing a collection of timeless and modern side tables we’re loving right now (and for many years to come).
At Batten Home, we intentionally curate a collection of thoughtfully designed items that are functional, sustainable, and beautiful. Everything you find here, including the modern side tables we’re about to share with you, is timeless––inspired by a core philosophy of Danish design.
The items we curate age beautifully––we know that because we have lived with them for many years and are now a part of our lives, our home, and our story.
Your taste may change over the years, but these pieces will stick with you.
Let this collection ignite a spark of inspiration to add something new to your space that can be styled and re-styled as your space grows.
We think you’ll love them as much as we do!
Insert Side Table by Ferm Living
The Insert Side Table is the epitome of functional art for the modern home. This modern side table was lovingly crafted with solid ash wood by Danish design brand Ferm Living. We love how the heavy cylindrical base and light oval top are thoughtfully joined via an organically curved joint. This side table is truly a conversation piece that works perfectly in a variety of spaces, including living rooms, lounge areas, and even bedrooms in place of a more traditional nightstand.
Georg Side Table by Skagerak
Nordic design and Japanese minimalism meet with this blissfully simple modern side table made with sustainably sourced oak. This side table design was born when Danish Design brand Skagerak noticed how many people were removing the cushion from their classic Georg Stool to use it as a table. We love the minimal design that doesn’t skimp on details––notice the soft edges and slender poles that form the legs. If you appreciate this design, you’ll love every item within Skagerak’s Georg collection.
Halves Side Table by MUUTO
If you loved the geometric look of the Insert Side Table, you’ll love this modern side table, too. The unique pairing of materials––acrylic and stone––invites you to get creative in how you design and style this timeless piece. We love how the double platform provides extra space to showcase your most coveted design objects, or even simple everyday items. This design comes from a collaboration with Scandinavian design company MUUTO and MSDS Studio, a Toronto-based interior design company. It’s shown alongside the Leaf floor lamp, also from MUUTO.
Androgyne Side Table by Menu
The name of this sculptural and modern side table is inspired by the design itself. The base, made from laser-cut steel legs, adds a strong and precise form intentionally designed to perfectly complement the refined marble top. This elegant yet powerful combination blends masculine and feminine design elements to suggest true androgyny. We love how the shine of the honed marble top contrasts against the matte steel. This piece comes from Danish design brand Menu and is styled with a modern LED table lamp, also from Menu. Menu partners with some of the industry’s most talented designers––this particular side table was designed by Copenhagen-based Norwegian architect and designer Danielle Siggerud.
Marble Table by Ferm Living
This piece is another great modern side table if you appreciate the refined look of natural marble. This Ferm Living design works beautifully in front of the sofa if you’re short on space, or simply place it in a corner to showcase your favorite design objects. The solid marble top is supported by a powder-coated metal frame and comes in black (shown above), white, or brown.
Building Table by Skagerak
Arch Table by Kristina Dam Studio
This neutral arched table from Kristina Dam is such a modern and timeless side table. Made from powder-coated steel, this table is easy to care for, so you can keep styling it in different ways throughout your home from one season to the next, for years to come. The cool tobacco color is neutral enough to work in a variety of spaces––use it as an accent table to showcase artwork, as a side table next to a cushy sofa, or as a gorgeously minimal bedside table. If you love this piece, discover how Kristina Dam’s Danish design studio defines sculptural minimalism.
Around Coffee Table by MUUTO
While this piece may be described as a coffee table, it’s the smallest variation of a series of tables that works just as nicely as a side table. This series of tables was designed for MUUTO in collaboration with Thomas Bentzen, a Danish designer who thoughtfully designs Scandinavian inspired furniture with a focus on simplicity, rationality, and functionality. It is shown here alongside another MUUTO piece––the Fiber Lounge Chair.
Tablo Table by Normann Copenhagen
Another design collaboration worth highlighting is this playful design from Normann Copenhagen in collaboration with Danish designer Nicholai Wiig. We love Wiig’s bold yet fun take on a minimal table design––especially the contrast of the solid, wide top with the wooden legs. This modern side table is simple enough to blend into a variety of home styles, and also has a larger size if you want a matching set in a high-traffic living space.
Relate Side Table by MUUTO
This modern side table is another thoughtful design from MUUTO. Two surfaces are joined by a streamlined leg that simply exudes modern style. It’s the perfect piece for anyone looking to add a functional surface to a smaller space. Put it to use as a mobile laptop desk while working from the couch and slide it away as an accent table whenever it’s not needed. We also love how it looks styled aside your favorite reading chair or in a smaller bedroom.
