A Closer Look at MUUTO’s Soft Table Series
True to its name, the welcoming and versatile design of the Soft Table Series from MUUTO combines softened surfaces with understated functionalities to create a subtle yet impactful addition to any space. The recent introduction of new sizes––including coffee tables, small dining tables, and bar-height tables––offers even broader possibilities, ensuring that there is a perfect fit for every atmosphere and need, both in residential homes and commercial spaces.
Let’s explore the series through the lens of designer Jens Fager, one of Sweden’s most well-known and celebrated designers known for making a global impact with exhibitions in London, Milan, and Stockholm.
“I wanted to create something that was subtle yet characterful with the Soft Table Family, making a world of softened surfaces and understated functionalities come together into one,” explains Jens Fager. “Referencing the archetypal center table, the Soft Table has a quiet presence that allows for it to complement any atmosphere while echoing a modern elegance through its refined lines and slender form.”
Soft Side Table
It all started with the Soft Side Table. This simple yet subtly detailed design is a new perspective on a familiar archetype.
”The starting point of the Soft Side Table was to create something that was both subtle and characterful,” remarks designer Jens Fager in a conversation with MUUTO at his studio converted from a barn in the Swedish countryside. “Now, these two are often perceived as opposite poles, so the intent was to bring them together through softened surfaces and an understated yet sophisticated functionality.”
We especially love the addition of a subtle handle that makes it easy to move as needed.
“When one engages with the table, you discover this small albeit caring detail underneath that really adds to the experience when using the design in daily life,” says Fager.
The Soft Side Table comes in various sizes and colors, from neutral to vibrant, allowing for versatile combinations to meet both the aesthetic and functional needs of any space. The Soft Side Table square version is pictured below––continue reading to see the versatility of this table series.
Soft Table
The Soft Table is an extension of the side table, offering a small dining table that perfectly seats several guests for entertaining or day-to-day household meals. The Soft Table works beautifully in a breakfast nook, or as a space-efficient dining option in an apartment.
Soft Coffee Table
The Soft Coffee Table offers a subtle yet distinct design with softened surfaces and understated functionalities. Just like the original side table, a gentle groove beneath the tabletop makes it easy to move as needed.
The table's base, common across all pieces within the series, is crafted from powder-coated, die-cast aluminum, made with at least 97% recycled aluminum. The tabletop––which also comes in a square version––comes in a variety of materials and finishes, including a Solid Oiled Oak or Solid Dark Oiled Oak.
Soft Café Table
The Soft Café Table comes in a regular table height, counter height, and bar height, making it the perfect choice for bars, lounges, or coffee shops, while its subtle design works just as nicely in a private home.
The Soft Table series is an ideal example of soft and thoughtful design.
“This really shows this notion of having character without making much noise—the foot has a somewhat balanced effect while acting as a soft transition into the leg upon which the tabletop rests,” explains Fager.
