Heymat: Redefining Doormats from Basic Necessities to Design Elements

Your entryway sets the vibe for your entire space, and thoughtful entryway design is key to both make a good first impression and maximize functionality. Your door mat shouldn’t be an afterthought––in fact, it can be a valuable design element in an entryway that also effectively scrapes and traps dirt, absorbs moisture, and is easy to maintain.

That’s why we love Heymat, a family-owned Northern Norwegian company offering functional indoor and outdoor mats with anti-slip backing in a variety of styles to suit every kind of space.

Husband and wife team Sonja Djønne and Thoralf Liana ran a family business to clean and rent industrial mats. Based in Northern Norway, an area known for wet and windy weather, the couple realized that the industrial mats were the perfect solution for their own messy entryway. Though not aesthetically pleasing, it was effective, making it easy to keep clean.

This is where Heymat was born. The couple took their knowledge of industrial mats and passion for design to make a doormat with functionality equivalent to an industrial mat, with much better aesthetics.

Heymat launched its first collection in 2016 and has worked continuously since to develop new designs in collaboration with leading designers including Kristin Five Melvær and Hallgeir Homstvedt.

Heymat’s door mats fall in two categories: indoor mats and indoor/outdoor mats. We’ll walk you through the notable features of both types, along with the stories behind select designs.

The name Heymat is a play on the Norwegian expression heimatt, which means to return home. So, return home to these high quality, beautiful, and functional door mats.

Indoor Mats

All Heymat mats have everything you could ever want for a door mat:

• Stays put: Stays in place on the floor with a non-slip nitrile rubber backing
• Easy to clean: machine washable
• Allergy and asthma friendly: mat material does not contain any endocrine-disrupting or carcinogenic substances
• Recycled materials: Made from 100% PET recycled materials
• Durable: excellent absorption and dirt-trapping properties, stopping sand and grass from being dragged into the house

Hand

The design for Hand was meticulously drawn by hand, softening the rigid and rectangular grid. Named after a limestone specially picked for decorative use, this soft grey design with white details works in a variety of spaces. This unique pattern was designed by Kristine Five Melvær, who collaborated with Heymat on a variety of door mat designs.

Mix

A medley––or a mix––of rectangular shapes in various colors result in a contemporary pattern reminiscent of traditional woven textiles.

Mix comes in five colorways: Berry, Forest, Gem, Meadow, and Teklan.

The Teklan colorway was designed by talented Swedish artist Tekla Evelina Severin in her signature color palette inspired by natural gemstones and Mediterranean architecture.

Heymat x Sight Unseen

Heymat x Sight Unseen was born out of a collaboration between Heymat and Jill Singer and Monica Khemsurov, founders of online design magazine Sight Unseen.

The series of rugs, which come in Emerald, Lilac,and Peach, were inspired by iconic furniture forms, using bold, eye-catching, and organic shapes.

The Peach option features a palette of lemon yellow, deep indigo, and peach. The Emerald option features deep indigo and emerald green, while Lilac features lilac and olive green hues.

Løype

The Løype series of door mats draws inspiration from the fresh trails of cross-country skiing. Notice how lines resembling a ski track cross the mat in a simple, graphic pattern. The result is a classic and modern design that effectively hides grit and grime.

Created in collaboration with Norwegian design studio Vera & Kyte, Løype comes in three colorways: Breezy Beige, Cloudy Grey, and Stormy Blue.

Dis

Vera & Kyte were also behind the design of the Dis mat.
Dis Ocean is reminiscent of the hues of the North Sea, with dark blue, emerald, and pale shades found in the foaming waves.

Dis Floor Mat in Moss takes its colors from the sun-kissed forest floor while the Dis Floor Mat in Rust is inspired by the warm shades found in sand, mineral, and rock formations.

Eine

Designed by Caroline Olsson, the Eine collection is inspired by the sights of the Norwegian forest throughout the day.

Each colorway is united by a geometric pattern inspired by the sharp needles found on juniper shrubs in Norwegian forests.

With Eine Dawn, the beige and white hues are similar to the bare forest seen in autumn. Eine Noon tells the story of a summer’s day coming to an end, where greens and blues are vivid, bringing peace to its surroundings. Eine Nightfall features a black base inspired by the night, with golden lines reflecting the light from a bonfire

Grid

When designing the Grid series, Hallgeir Homstvedt wanted to create a tight graphic pattern, with thinner lines providing depth to the pattern reminiscent of tweed.
“Functionality forms the backbone of any successful design as it seamlessly integrates into users’ lives and provides practical solutions,” explains Hallgeir.

Chocolate Strawberry and Matcha Lemon are perfect complements to lighter wooden floors while Lime Candycane is perfect for a brighter feel with more contrast and color play.

Hagl

Catherine Christensen’s Hagl collection was inspired by cold, wet winters. The design, which comes in both Black and Silver, features a geometric pattern reminiscent of small pellets of hail seen in a dark evening or cloudy sky.

Indoor/Outdoor Rugs

The Heymat+ mats have all the features of the indoor rugs while being durable enough for outdoor use:

• Stays put - Stays in place on the floor with a non-slip nitrile rubber backing
• Easy to clean: The most effective way to clean the mat on a daily basis is with a vacuum cleaner, and it can also be shaken to get rid of sand or dirt. If the mat needs a more thorough cleaning, it can be rinsed with water.
• Allergy and asthma friendly: Heymat does not contain any endocrine-disrupting or carcinogenic substances.
• Recycled materials: Made from 100% PET recycled materials
• Durable: excellent absorption and dirt-trapping properties, stopping sand and grass from being dragged into the house.
  

Twine

When designing Twine, Kristine Five Melvær drew inspiration from shapes and fibers found in nature. The result is a free-feeling, organic look. 

“I wanted it to feel free, to be perceived as organic and alive, like a little piece of nature,” explains Kristine to Heymat. I wanted to work with a freer outline, so the motive comes out in a different way than if it had been restricted by a frame."
Twine comes in Beige, Green, and Grey, all intentionally chosen for their associations with particular components of nature. 
"Colors are a big part of the storytelling, and I wanted to keep it open for interpretation if the pattern is beige branches intertwining, flowing green acres seen from above, or even gray threads of wool dancing around each other,” explains Kristine.

Sand

Sand is another design from Kristine Five Melvær inspired by the calming elements of nature. We love its warm, earthy tones and captivating pattern.

Stein

Yet another design from Kristine Five Melvær is the Stein Floor Mat, featuring cool calming hues and a subtle pattern.

Sjø

Sjø is yet another captivating design from Kristine Five Melvær. Its soothing blue tone is reminiscent of the ocean, seen also through the wave-like pattern.

Hex

Designed by Lars Tornøe, the Hex mats draw inspiration from architecture and industry. The hexagon and circle are repeated and combined, resulting in a calming pattern. Hex comes in two sizes, perfect for smaller entryways, and two colors: Desert and Soil.

Strå

Inspired by tall grass swaying in a warm summer breeze, the Strå Floor Mat features a beautifully illustrated soft and geometric design in a deep and earthy green. We love the three-dimensional pattern that is both tactile and meditative. The texture is perfect for scraping the bottoms of shoes before walking into the home.
