Form & Refine Seating - Chairs and Stools That Embody Nordic Design
Form & Refine is known and celebrated for their refined approach to classic Danish design, continuing the tradition of seating that doesn't compromise on quality, materials, aesthetics, or functionality. Here, we'll walk through Form & Refine chairs, stools, and benches that embody Danish design.
Motif Armchair
The Motif Armchair features classic Scandinavian furniture design elements via the beautiful natural webbing that provides a comfortable and durable seat stretched across a solid oak frame. Danish design duo Herman Studio, who are also two of Form and Refine’s three founders, wanted to create a chair that is harmonious and beautiful from all angles. Notice how the webbing continues to the backrest for an aesthetically pleasing look, even when placed against a table.
Angle Stool Series
The Angle series is a collection of flexible and comfortable solid oak stools united by the angled seat––the two sides of the seat are angled 5 degrees towards each other, offering exceptional comfort. The Angle Foldable Stool is a well-loved favorite, featuring a brass angle hook for mounting the stool on the wall when not in use.
Here is what designer Jonas Herman has to say about the Angle Foldable Stool:
”Our wish was to design a comfortable and cool folding stool. Concurrently it had to be decorative and distinct when hung upon the wall. Because the top seating parts are reversed towards each other, it can be sat on pleasantly for hours on end”
Jonas describes the philosophy behind the Angle stool series:
”We aimed for a light, comfortable stool that would stand up to everyday use. Angling the two components of the seat made the small stool surprisingly comfortable, even with prolonged use. The transverse bars give the construction added strength.”
Shoemaker Chairs
The Shoemaker Chairs are a Danish design classic that dates back to 1936. Produced by Form and Refine’s local Joinery, the Shoemaker Chairs are a truly eye-catching design with a complex construction process. The signature seat is produced out of one solid piece of wood, making each and every chair unique. Each block is carved to perfection and then sanded by hand, making the chair incredibly comfortable and durable. With three different heights, this stool can be used as a regular stool, a side chair, a counter stool, or a bar stool.
Blueprint Chair
For a stunning and stackable seating solution, turn to the Blueprint Chair. With no visible hardware, each chair has a stunning and smooth design.
Jonas of Herman Studio describes the philosophy behind the Blueprint chair:
”With this chair we searched to balance something refined and robust at the same time. We aimed for a chair with distinct character and gave it elongated back legs that smoothly grip the curved backrest. It should also be stackable, comfortable and fit into any environment.”
Block Lounge Chair
The comfortable yet compact Block Lounge Chair is a celebration of wood and natural materials.
Here's a look behind the design straight from Jonas Herman:
”We wanted to make a small, compact chair with a distinctive expression. The sturdy rear legs play an important role for the chair’s expression, construction and dimensions. During the development phase, We had an intensive focus on integrating as much comfort as possible into a relatively small chair."
Lightweight Stool & Bench
The ultra-light stool and bench features detailed joinery and solid wood slats. Elegant and composed, both the Lightweight Stool and the Lightweight Bench is a practical seating solution for a variety of spaces.
Here's how Jonas describes their approach to the Lightweight design series:
"We wanted to pay tribute to classic carpentry traditions by constructing the furniture with beautiful and classic-style wooden joints. We wanted to make a light impact furniture in both a visual and physical sense which reflects the quality grounded in our contemporary design language. The design is graphically tight but at the same time soft and tactile when used.”
